ChatGPT vs Claude in 2026: Which AI Is Actually Better?
An honest comparison of Claude Opus 4.6 and GPT-5.2 across coding, reasoning, pricing, and real-world use. Based on official benchmarks and verified data.
What you are choosing between
OpenAI shipped GPT-5.2 in December 2025. Anthropic followed with Claude Opus 4.6 on February 5, 2026. They are close enough in raw ability that the choice comes down to what you actually do with them. This comparison sticks to official benchmarks and published pricing.

Coding
SWE-bench Verified measures whether a model can resolve real GitHub issues end-to-end. Claude Opus 4.6 scores 80.8%. GPT-5.2 in thinking mode scores 80.0%. The gap is small, but Claude has held a consistent edge in agentic coding tasks across multiple benchmark rounds.
Terminal-Bench 2.0, which tests multi-step terminal-based coding workflows, shows the same pattern: 65.4% for Claude, 64.7% for GPT-5.2.
OpenAI also released GPT-5.3-Codex on February 12, 2026, a specialized coding variant. If your work is purely code generation, that model is worth watching, though it is not a general-purpose replacement for GPT-5.2.

Reasoning and knowledge
GPQA Diamond tests graduate-level science reasoning. GPT-5.2 Pro takes this one at 93.2% versus Claude Opus 4.6 at 91.3%. Even in standard thinking mode (not Pro), GPT-5.2 scores 92.4%, still ahead.
BigLaw Bench tests legal reasoning. Claude Opus 4.6 scores 90.2% here. OpenAI has not published a comparable GPT-5.2 score on this test.
On professional knowledge work more broadly, Geeky Gadgets ran an independent evaluation and found Claude Opus 4.6 wins 70% of head-to-head comparisons against GPT-5.2, with a 144-point Elo lead on GDPval-AA, a benchmark that measures economically valuable tasks in finance, legal, and consulting.

Context window
Claude Opus 4.6 accepts up to 1 million tokens of input, roughly 700,000 words. GPT-5.2 via the consumer ChatGPT Plus app is capped at 32,000 tokens; the 400,000-token context is available via API only. If you regularly upload entire codebases, legal contracts, or long transcripts, Claude's context advantage is significant.
Multimodal
GPT-5.2 handles text, images, audio, and video natively in a single conversation. It scores 90.5% on Video-MMMU for video understanding.
Claude Opus 4.6 accepts text and images only, up to 100 images per API request. It is strong at interpreting charts, diagrams, and document scans. But if you need to feed the model audio recordings or video clips, GPT-5.2 is the only option between these two.
How they reason
Both models offer extended reasoning, but the implementation is different.
Claude Opus 4.6 uses Adaptive Thinking. The model decides on its own when and how deeply to reason based on your request. No toggle. You ask a question and it allocates reasoning effort automatically.
GPT-5.2 gives you explicit thinking modes. You choose between instant response, standard thinking, or extended reasoning upfront. More manual control, but you have to make the call yourself.
API pricing
GPT-5.2 standard is roughly 3x cheaper: $1.75 per million input tokens versus Claude's $5.00. Output pricing follows suit at $14 versus $25 per million tokens. Both offer batch processing at 50% off and prompt caching discounts.
The picture flips at the high end. GPT-5.2 Pro (maximum reasoning) costs $21 input / $168 output per million tokens, which is far more expensive than Claude Opus 4.6 at any tier.
| Tier | Claude Opus 4.6 | GPT-5.2 |
|---|---|---|
| Standard input | $5.00/M | $1.75/M |
| Standard output | $25.00/M | $14.00/M |
| Max reasoning input | $10.00/M (long ctx) | $21.00/M (Pro) |
| Max reasoning output | $37.50/M (long ctx) | $168.00/M (Pro) |
| Cached input | 90% off | 90% off |
| Batch | 50% off | 50% off |
Consumer subscriptions
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Go | $8/mo | Lower-tier access |
| ChatGPT Plus | $20/mo | GPT-5.2 with limits |
| Claude Pro | $20/mo | All Claude models, 5x free usage |
| Claude Max 5x | $100/mo | Higher limits |
| ChatGPT Pro | $200/mo | Unlimited GPT-5.2 Pro |
| Claude Max 20x | $200/mo | Maximum Claude usage |
OpenAI has the edge at the low end with its $8/month Go plan. At $20/month both offer similar value. At $200, ChatGPT Pro gives you unlimited access to its strongest reasoning mode, while Claude Max 20x gives you higher usage limits across all Claude models.
Pricing for African users
Both subscriptions require a USD payment method. At roughly N1,345 per dollar (February 2026 CBN rate), a $20/month subscription costs about N26,900. A $200 Pro/Max plan is N269,000/month.
The bigger barrier is not cost but payment infrastructure. Only about 2% of Nigerians own an international credit card (Statista). That locks out almost everyone from direct subscriptions.
AfricanAI offers access to both Claude Opus 4.6 and GPT-5.2 (plus 20+ other models) on a pay-as-you-go basis. You pay in local currency via mobile money. No subscription, no USD card.
For someone who sends 50 to 100 messages per week, pay-as-you-go typically costs a fraction of a $20 monthly subscription.
When Claude Opus 4.6 makes more sense
- You work with long documents, codebases, or research papers (1M context is a real advantage)
- Coding is a big part of your workflow
- You need strong performance on professional tasks like legal analysis or financial modeling
- You want the model to manage its own reasoning depth
When GPT-5.2 makes more sense
- You need to process audio or video alongside text
- API cost at scale is your main concern (roughly 3x cheaper at the standard tier)
- You want manual control over reasoning depth
- You need the broader plugin and integration ecosystem
So which one?
On benchmarks, they trade wins. Claude leads on coding and professional knowledge work. GPT-5.2 leads on science reasoning and multimodal breadth. Claude has the bigger context window. GPT-5.2 has the lower API price.
If you are in Africa, you do not have to pick one. AfricanAI lets you switch between both without separate subscriptions or a USD card.
